Instead of taking part in the usual Black Friday discounts, this year we have decided that as a team we are all going to take part in a mini beach or river clean during the week running up to Black Friday.
We are using Green Friday to show people just one way you can make a stand and help to restore the environment. A mini beach or river clean is a perfect way to start by doing something small, but super effective. Since the Coronavirus pandemic many of our staff are now working from home in different parts of the country, so we're encouraging them to clean up either a beach or river depending on what is local to them.
Plastic seems to find its way into all corners of our oceans and rivers, and by picking up just a few bits of litter on your daily dog walk or weekend stroll on the beach you can help to fight back.
Throughout the week we will post photos of our clean ups on our social media accounts, so please feel free to show your support by following and sharing your own beach or river cleaning experiences with us.
Breaking it down: Why do we need to clean up our beaches and rivers?
- You are actively contributing to making a change straight away - instantly removing the plastic from that environment and preventing it from causing further damage.
- Fishing nets can tangle up fish, sea birds and other marine life.
- Plastic doesn’t biodegrade so will just continue to break down smaller and smaller into pieces that can take hundreds of years to degrade.
- Chemicals that were added to the plastic in manufacturing can seep into the marine environment.
- Plastic is often mistaken for food by animals. Some species cannot digest it so it will sit in their stomachs, eventually killing the animal
