How to: fit a bodyboard plug

So you've chosen your new bodyboard and you're stoked to get out on the water, but as with everything, safety comes first.
Does your new board have a leash already attached to it? No? Then follow these steps on how to add one before you get going.

1. You need to know if your new board is a [single or double] stringer board.

This is referring back to the actual making of the board, but don't worry, it should be pretty simple to find out.
Most boards should come with some stickers on it to clearly indicate if the board is a single, or double stringer board.
Know which type of board you're working with? Great, time to move on to step 2.

2. Knowing where to place the plug.

If you're board is a double stringer, it is best to choose the centre of the board for your plug so that you don't damage the board.
If you have a single stringer board, you'll need to choose a side as you won't be able to go straight down the centre.
Now, if you already have a preferred side from past experience then by all means go with it, however, if you are new to choosing a side, try to avoid letting your leash interfere and get in the way of any actions. For example, if you drop with the right knee, you will want the leash on the left hand side so your leg won't be restricted.

TOP TIP:

Make sure you are at least a few inches from the nose and rail of the board to ensure your plug will stay secure.

3. Choose your spot and mark it. Now it's time to pierce.

It is universally recommended to use a screwdriver when piercing your board in order to stay precise and avoid damaging the board.
Place the board on a flat surface with a gap below where you are piercing. i.e. between two chairs or on the edge of a table.
Push the screwdriver through your marker and all the way through the board, giving it a few slight twists to make the hole big enough for the plug.

4. Once the hole is made, unscrew the plug to separate it

Make sure you know which side of the plug is top and which is bottom.
Insert the top of the plug in the board and add the other half through the other side of the board before twisting them in to each other to securely re-attach the plug pieces.

5.

Well done, your plug is securely attached to your new board.
Now simply attach your leash to the plug by tying it back on and you're ready to put your board to good use!
