FAQ: Drysuit Care

Owning a dry suit will completely change your life while out on the water, and although buying one can be a big investment, you truly do get what you pay for.

As a result, we want our suit to last as long as possible, so here are 4 answers to frequently asked questions that will help you do just that.

 

What should I do with the zips?

Folding a zip on itself so that it buckles or creases can ultimately cause it to leak somewhere down the line.

Different manufacturers have different zip tech designs, and depending on the suit you may have rear entry, shoulder or waist entry. You may also have a relief/convenience zip.

Try to keep the zip in its normal position wherever possible. Applying lubricant to your zip evert now and then keeps the zip action smooth, so you don't need to force it preventing long term problems.

Getting a friend to help open and close your suit (usually if rear entry) will also help to take pressure off the zip.

 

How do I store my Drysuit?

Make sure you completely dry your suit before storing it away. If you don't you may find some mould later on, and it will smell too!

Use a hanger that is able to take the weight of your drysuit. Try avoid using thin wire hangers where possible as these often put lots of pressure on the fabric and neck gasket.

Although hanging outside on a sunny day is probably the quickest way to dry, try to avoid direct sunlight if you want to avoid and colour loss.

 

Will folding my suit damage it?

Not if you're careful. I like to fold my suit whenever I'm not using it. Folding your drysuit keeps it neat and tidy, and also protects it from any accidental damage.

Should I wear shoes with my drysuit?

YES!

Most drysuits have socks, usually made from either waterproof fabric or latex. If this is the case make sure you invest in a good pair of shoes or boots to protect them (and your feet). Ideally you want to wear a thin pair of socks over the top of your drysuit as well, as this will stop any sand, salt, or dirt rubbing on the inside of your shoe, causing tears.

DO NOT walk around in just your drysuit socks. This will cause them to tear!
